A Christmas Carol

I imagine we all have our favourite Christmas films and reading. I would have to say that my all-time favourite Christmas story is Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” Many of you will know the story of how a miser, Ebenezer Scrooge, is visited on Christmas Eve by the ghost of his old partner, Jacob Marley, and then by three spirits who guide him through Christmas past, present and future. Now these are Scrooge’s own Christmases past, present and future, and as he travels through them, Scrooge is confronted with how wicked a man he has become, and is changed by the experience. Well that’s all fiction, but in the book of Revelation (chapter 1, verses 5-7, NIV) there is something which sounds to me rather like Christmas past, present and future. PAST. Jesus has freed us from our sins. PRESENT. Jesus has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father. FUTURE. Jesus is coming with the clouds. This Christmas, as we look back to the birth of Jesus, let’s remember that we are what we are now, people living under his rule and serving him, because of his birth, life, death and resurrection. Also, let’s never forget he is coming again in the future in great power and glory, as King of kings and Lord of lords. Isn’t that a great Christmas story?
