Spiritual training

Let me introduce you to our dog! His name is Rowan and he’s a black and white English springer spaniel. If you’ve ever had a puppy, you’ll know that training is one of the most important elements of its early life. When Rowan was a puppy, we started to train him to obey commands, such as “Rowan, come” when we wanted him to return to us; “Rowan, sit” when it was time to put his lead on before a walk; and “Rowan, give” when he’d picked up something he shouldn’t have.

You know, obedience training is important for us too. In different parts of the Bible, we come across these “come”, “sit” and “give” commands. For example, Jesus invites the weary and burdened to come to him (Matthew 11:28); like Mary of Bethany, we need to sit at the feet of Jesus to worship and learn from him (Luke 10:39); and many of the Psalms encourage us to give thanks.  How’s your spiritual training coming along?
